For the first time in 30 years, new clouds have been added to the International Cloud Atlas!
And these are pretty neat!
We get so many cloud pictures sent to us on social media from all of you during different weather events. And some of the clouds you've probably seen right here in central VA have been added to the list!
These clouds and how they form are incredible! A newly added cloud to the Atlas are called Mammatus clouds.
These eerie looking clouds were just seen this past weekend over Kenbridge in Lunenburg county by Michael Edmonds.
This one is from Ryan Stumpf in Midlothian, who also saw them just a couple weeks ago.
Then there’s this one..
It’s pretty cool to look at, but can be kind of scary looking as it approaches you. It’s called a Roll Cloud. It's a new cloud species called volutus.
One of my favorites to spot in the sky are called Kelvin Helmholtz clouds. They basically look like waves in the sky.
Keep your eye to the sky, you may be able to spot some of these newly added clouds next!
