When Bad is Good

One of my pet peeves is calling weather BAD especially when sometimes the weather is actually good if it's examined closely.

The Blizzard that affected Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas yesterday was well forecasted days in advance. There's no reason why anyone there should have been surprised. My favorite part of the news coverage was a national reporter talking to a farmer who basically said, "Bring it on-- the more snow the better!"

Why did he feel this way? The states now blanketed in thick snow are also dealing with extreme drought. Snow is welcome there. They'll take heavy rain, too. More rain/snow is needed in this region in the months to come.

Winter Weather Advisories

Advisories for a wintry mix of sleet and freezing rain developing in pre-dawn hours Friday over southern and western Va. For metro Richmond, should see a light mix around or a little after sunrise.

Late evening update for Saturday

Accumulating snow most likely towards evening, although wet snow mixed with rain will be likely through the day before then. generally light amounts, heaviest to the south and east.

It looks like southeastern Virginia will stand the best chance to see a couple inches of snow later Saturday, with up to 1" possible closer to the metro Richmond area. The potential snow will come primarily from a low that will be developing during the day Saturday well offshore, but close enough to brush the eastern half of the state with snow. It remains a tough call, since ground temperatures will still be quite warm, and much of the snow that falls will melt on impact. Best timing for any snow that could stick will be between 5pm and 9pm Saturday, and per the above map, better chances will be to the southeast. We'll be monitoring. -Jim

What a change coming tomorrow!

What a change coming tomorrow! We're expecting snow from sometime late tomorrow morning through tomorrow evening. This will likely start as a rain mid-morning (10am?) and then change to snow during the midday hours.

Forecast in Richmond: Dusting-2"

Keep in mind the ground/roads will be WARM to start (we'll hit 60 today) so it may take a long time before it accumulates.

*note: the computer model forecast in this graphic is showing VERY high snow totals along the coast but that's likely overdone.*
