Sandy will cause some coastal flooding due to storm surge and big waves but with a landfall in New Jersey, the biggest surge will be from New Jersey to New England. Easterly winds on the northern flank of the storm will jam water into the coastline and harbors of the Northern Mid-Atlantic to New England. Surge flooding might be historic in those areas.
Farther South, the Chesapeake Bay will have damaging high tides and moderate coastal flooding but as the winds at the height of the storm come from the NW, water will tend to be flushed out of the bay OR into the western side of the Eastern Shore.
