The race for the next Virginia governor is nearly a year and a half away, but top Democrats have put their support behind Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam.
At this past week's Democratic convention in Richmond, Northam's campaign said current Gov. Terry McAuliffe, U.S. Sens. Tim Kaine and Mark Warner (both former governors of Virginia) and state Attorney General Mark Herring have endorsed the lieutenant governor.
There isn't expected to be much opposition to Northam getting the nomination.
For the Republicans, three candidates have announced their candidacy:
- Ed Gillespie, former chairman of the Republican National Committee and former U.S. Senate candidate
- Corey Stewart, Donald Trump's campaign chair and former lieutenant governor candidate
- Rob Wittman, a U.S. representative
