It will be a busy day in the campaign for Governor of Virginia as all three campaigns for the top spot are now in full "go" mode as we now stand less than a month away from the final vote.
Here is a rundown of what to look for.
CUCCINELLI'S MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT:
The GOP Attorney General, Ken Cuccinelli who has struggled in recent polls has the press buzzing this morning because he has promised a "major announcement" about his opponent Terry McAuliffe during a 1pm event today in Newport News. Campaign officials refuse to event hint what the announcement will be about, but Cuccinelli has a desperate need to change the narrative of the race. Could this be the trick? We will find out this afternoon. The campaign promises a link to the event so everyone can see.
UPDATE: The Cuccinelli camp just sent out the link to the live event. You can see it streaming at https://www.cuccinelli.com/freelunch/
IS SARVIS IN OR OUT?
If there is was one 50-50 question in this campaign it would be "Will Robert Sarvis be invited to the final debate?" We are only a day away from the self-imposed deadline from debate organizers WDBJ & Virginia Tech and based on the information we know about the criteria the decision could go either way.
Here is what Kelly Zuber, the Roanoke CBS Affiliate's News Director told me via e-mail yesterday:
"The third party candidate will be invited to participate in the debate if he is polling at 10% or above in major statewide independent polls released within the period three weeks prior to October 10. The decision concerning eligibility will be made by WDBJ7 in consultation with political analysts Harry Wilson from Roanoke College and Bob Denton from Virginia Tech and will rely heavily on the averages of major polls as listed on www.realclearpolitics.com."
So what is the current status of Sarvis in the Real Clear Politics average? 9.1%-- tight. Clearly not at the 10% threshold organizers have required, but based on the statement by Zuber the decision will not be made by polls alone. Sarvis was the subject of a profile piece by respected WDBJ political reporter Joe Dashiell on Tuesday.
One interesting note to keep in mind, Roanoke College's Harry Wilson is one of the main decision makers as to whether or not Sarvis gets in. In the Roanoke College's poll Sarvis could only muster 9%. Remember the magic number is 10%.
MCAULIFFE TOUTS GOP SUPPORT
As the campaign begins its push to the final days, the McAuliffe campaign hasn't given up on their negative attacks on Cuccinelli, but they have moved to a decidedly more positive tone. They've rolled out a series of ads softening up the former DNC Chair's image by showing him as a bi-partisan problem solver. Among them is a new ad featuring Will Sessoms the GOP Mayor of Virginia Beach whose endorsement of McAuliffe was a big coup for the Democrat.
Interestingly Sessoms, who broke with his party to endorse McAuliffe, will stick with the Republicans in the race for Attorney General. He announced his endorsement of Sen. Mark Obenshain this morning.
We will keep an eye on all of it. For the latest updates immediately follow me on twitter at https://twitter.com/ryanobles.
