Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli (R) has spent the last several days beating back a torrent of criticism for his association with Republicans in Washington who have stood their ground on the government shutdown.
House GOP leaders, with support of some Republicans in the Senate demanded significant reforms or the outright de-funding of the Affordable Care Act before they would agree to a continuing resolution to fund the Federal Government.
That standoff led to a shutdown which is now entering day four.
Today during a roundtable event on the health care law, Cuccinelli said he did not agree with the strategy to tie health care to a government shutdown.
"I think both sides are going to have to give on this a little bit," Cuccinelli said. "A shutdown is not a tool that should be used as part of negotiations over other aspects of government."
Cuccinelli did not back away from his belief that the Affordable Care Act needs serious reform or outright repeal. He also reiterated his belief that Virginia should not rush into an expansion of its Medicaid program.
Democrats believe Cuccinelli's stance is a weak response to the GOP conduct in Washington.
"He's given lip service to everything under the sun, but it would be very easy for him to say it was wrong to shut down the government over an extreme political agenda and you should re-open it," said DPVA spokesman Brian Coy.
Coy once again tied Cuccinelli to Texas Senator Ted Cruz (R) will appear at the same Family Foundation event in Richmond that Cuccinelli will this weekend. He called on Cuccinelli to cancel his appearence.
The Attorney General refused to do so, but did put some space between he and Cruz by saying that the two don't agree on everything.
"Would I have handled the federal budget situation the same way as a Senator from Virginia?" Cuccinelli asked himself. "Probably not. I would handle it differently."
The longer the government remains partially closed the more Cuccinelli will be forced to deal with questions like these. He as much as anyone has to be hopeful this situation gets resolved as soon as possible.
