I like to go on an easy run the day after a marathon- or any other long race- ullsauy like 5 or 6 miles really slow with very little leg lift- like a shuffle. It feels good to do that than stretch afterwards. I don't take too many days off, unless it's by accident due to my day's events. I only ice if I'm injured. I try and stretch after every run, not just the 'hard' ones. Naps are great after long runs- sleep is good and shouldn't be purposely avoided- it gives the muscles a chance to repair themselves.

After a very hard goal race, like the marathon, I'll take at least 2 days off comtlepely and then resume very easy running on the third day. I'll keep it easy for about 2 weeks. After a very hard workout, I'll usually just run easy for the next 2 days.I always ice and stretch, etc. I'll definitely nap whenever I can. Napping helps me recover well.
