Richmond National Battlefield Park to commemorate the 1864 Overland Campaign

Rural Plains -Totopotomoy Creek Battlefield/Cold Harbor Battlefield
From May 29 to June 7, 2014, Richmond National Battlefield Park will commemorate the 150th anniversary of the battles of Totopotomoy Creek and Cold Harbor. Programs will be offered by National Park Service park rangers, preservation specialists, historians, and as well as living history volunteers and the Fort McHenry Guard Fife and Drum Corps. The events will offer a mixture of battlefield walking tours, living history demonstrations, family activities, and a variety of other anniversary-themed programs exploring the campaign and its impact on the course of the Civil War. For battlefield enthusiasts, the "real time" tours that are offered on the actual ground at the precise time of the anniversary are a special opportunity-a modern way of saluting the men who fought there so long ago.

Performances take place every Friday through Saturday from 4 until 8 p.m. and Sunday from 1 until 5 p.m. on the Summer Sounds stage, located near the Pop Jet Fountain.This weekend's performers include Klaxton Brown (Jazz, R&B, Gospel, Pop, Country, Big Band) on Saturday, May 31 and Fender Benders (Rock from 60's to Modern) on Sunday, June 1.

Run Like A Girl

Pocahontas State Park
Richmond will experience a healthy dose of girl power when Run Like a Girl, a four-mile run, walk or jog comes to Pocahontas State Park on June 1. Run Like A Girl is a series of women-only run/walk events that aim to promote a healthy lifestyle and fight ovarian cancer. A portion of every Run Like A Girl entry is donated to the HERA Women's Cancer Foundation, a nationally recognized nonprofit that works to stop the loss of women from ovarian cancer by promoting Health, Empowerment, Research and Awareness. Participants are also encouraged to do additional fundraising to help fight ovarian cancer. Registration is open online for individuals and teams.Run Like A Girl was founded in 2008 by Mark Junkermann and Theresa Marie Green who both lost loved ones to women's cancers. Today, Run Like A Girl events attract hundreds of women each year to run/walk events in Richmond and Virginia Beach.
